Followers of TTH probably think we are two active fitness fanatics with the same shared routine and habits. Wrong, wrong, wrong! We are sooooo different. Organised packing is a skill H totally lacks… think half the house for a 2 day getaway. Thankfully, E is a bit more together and after many years of nagging has gradually refined the content list of our day to day gym bag ‘carry’ essentials…
THE SNACK LIFE
Never ever head for a workout hungry. Hungry soon sounds like Hangry. If you’re anything like us, you’ll not only be grouchy and grumpy towards everyone else at the gym, you’ll not give the session your all either. Keep the pre workout snack simple but don’t think you can do without it. We usually opt for something simple like a bounce ball, a banana or peanut butter topped rice cakes! Don’t run on empty.
YOUR OWN MINI HYDRATION STATION
I know most clubs provide water on the floor but if you’re visiting the tiny gym fountain for a snatched mouthful of water every second rep, you’re not only wasting half your workout time, you’re also not drinking nearly enough. Get yourself a good bottle that doesn’t leak and do your bit for the planet in the process. Don’t go to the communal water dispenser for a chat or a rest, drink on the move between machines from your own personalised bottle. Pimp it up a bit. Stay happy and hydrated!
THE HAIR NECESSITIES
Scrape it back and stick it up. This is not a catwalk. You can look beautiful later. Be practical. Don’t be attacked by your own hair half way through the warm up. It will soon become a distraction and that’s the last thing you need during a session… an excuse! Neither is it advisable to be unable to see mid walking lunge. If the mane requires a bit of taming, be sure there’s a tangle teezer tucked in the bag too!
Invest in a decent sports bra… one that does the job on its own. You should not need to wear your normal bra under your sports bra. This is a solo jobby, so be sure you have bounce around when picking your partner in crime!
It’s really best not to wear the same footwear to lift, cycle, run and yoga in. Each requires different support, stability and stance so make sure you seek some advice on this. I know this sounds like a bit of an excuse to fill your footwear rack and spoil yourself but your feet figure in most every exercise we do. Look after them. We’re happy to help if you need some advice.
Not all gyms have their own foam rollers and even if they do they have often been rolled within an inch of their life. We’re not expecting you to lug a foam roller to the gym with you, but a tennis ball or massage ball is super easy to pack and the perfect tool to release the tighter bits of your body pre workout.
This is more of an H essential than an E one but nonetheless we all need to zone out sometimes. Concentration and focus are key. H is all for the biggest ear encompassing Beats on the market to drown out all neighbouring grunting. And why is it that gym desk staff invariably have such terrible tastes in music?! (no offence). E prefers the smaller sleeker sports versions to accompany her own grunting. If we’re being honest the latter are more practical if you’re planning on doing any serious bounding or bouncing.
- A BUDDY Hard to squeeze in your bag, we know, but we promise it’s well worth it.
