It has never been more possible to move your body in a way that feels right to you. Here in London we are so lucky to have infinite options, studios, disciplines + locations to find a form of exercise to align with what our bodies + minds need. With that in mind, it can become equally easy to get stuck in a training rut, putting our bodies through drills, motions + movements that feel comfortable and safe.
But as we all know, the greatest feelings, experiences + changes come as soon as we step OUT of our comfort zone. And what better way than by adding martial arts into the mix? Today we’re talking all things Muay Thai, an empowering + incredibly challenging way to put our body and mind through their paces.
Hailing from Asia, Muay Thai is a martial art also known as ‘The Art of 8 Limbs’ (2 fists, 2 elbows, 2 knees and 2 shins). As the national sport of Thailand, it combines stand up striking and clinching (grappling). Scary as it sounds, it’s far from it. This holistic martial art offfers a whole host of benefits you can enjoy without having to step foot into a ring.
TELL ME ABOUT THE BENEFITS…
Using both the anaerobic and aerobic training systems, it requires body and mind to keep up in ways most workouts would never require. Expect some seriously burning lungs, all while your brain attempts to keep up with the vast array of skills + drills.
From just your first session you’ll realise all the amazing things your body can do when its challenged in ways it has never been before. Who needs an hour on the treadmill when you can spend the same amount of time getting your heart rate up while simultaneously working your core, upper & lower body strength, speed, power, agility, co ordination and flexibility.
And that’s just the physical side. There are so many more rewards to be reaped for our minds from Muay Thai too.
THE ULTIMATE STRESS BUSTER
It’s no secret that hitting the pads, jabbing, ducking and weaving are epic ways to let off some steam after a long day, so we couldn’t be more excited to discover a fresh way to get some headspace.
Similar to weightlifting, learning new skills and progressing in a sport can do wonders for women’s confidence. Not only will challenging your mind make for a super satisfying session, but it’s so much more likely to boost self-esteem when you break through limiting beliefs and achieve goals that you never thought you could. Your motivation will be sky high and you’ll develop an even greater love for your body and all that it can do.
WHERE DO I START?
As with anything new, the first step is to just go for it. Lose your inhibitions and fears and sign up to a class— no prior experience in marital arts is required. Take a friend and make an evening of it.
