With studios found in New York, Mallorca and Venice Beach (our studio of choice on our travels) if RA: MA Institute for Applied Yogic Science + Technology isn’t on your radar, it’s certainly about to be. Founded by Guru Jagat in 2013, it is a haven for teachers + souls that seek to learn more about Kundalini Yoga + Meditation and deepen their practice, while learning how to use it to chemically release, strengthen + activate the genetic code, while igniting the energy centres of the body, mind + spirit’.
BUT WHAT IS KUNDALINI?
Let’s back up a little bit, as we know Kundalini Yoga is new to lots of you. We’re still at the beginning of our journey with our practice, but my oh my have we been swept off our feet. You all know Yoga as an incredibly deep, complex concept that taps into the mind-body connection through a blend of breath work (pranayama), asana + meditation. Kundalini has no pre-requisites- you don’t have to be overtly spiritual, flexible, experienced, a linguist in the vocabulary of yoga. Known as a ‘householder’s’ tradition, it’s for ANYONE + EVERYONE that seeks to uncover a deeper recognition of themselves- the way they think, move, breathe, behave… you get the gist.
Heard of that all-elusive state of ‘enlightenment’? As a deeply meditative practice, Kundalini is the style of yoga that will get you there. What is enlightenment you ask? To break it down, it’s essentially a state of neutrality- normal, everyday troubles don’t affect you so much. You are able to acknowledge, observe, feel + move on. Through both the mundaneness and traumas of the ordinary- commuting to work, doing the dishes, getting divorced, changing jobs, the energy that flows through you from a regular Kundalini practice gives you the strength + power to find JOY in these moments.
So you get the idea- Kundalini Yoga gives you the tools to face the ups and downs of the modern world + has the power to transform the everyday into something magical. Not only will you find that you can better face the pressures of society today, but that you can SUCCEED in the face of them.
A ROUND UP OF RA : MA
Now onto our experience at the iconic RA : MA Institute. If we were to sum it up in one word, it would be MAGIC. But we’ll give you more than that. The Venice studio was absolutely beautiful- expansive, made up of hand-stenciled beams, carved wood work + reclaimed hard wood floors. Not to mention the incredible retail space + exclusive fashion + lifestyle brand collaborations we could lust after for hours (FYI, we did).
We were lucky enough to experience a 90 minute session with Guru Jagat herself- and boy was it mind blowing. We worked through all the traditional pillars of Kundalini Yoga + Meditation, including kriya, a series of postures, breath + sound that ignite a sequence of physical + mental changes affecting mind, body + spirit simultaneously. The class also featured lots of breath work, meditation, + relaxation. But there was one part that really stood for us- fruit meditation. Yes you heard us- meditation WITH FRUIT. Stay with us on this one. We were each given a piece of fruit with which we engaged in a meditation, holding it out in front of us for 15 minutes. We then didn’t eat our own fruit, but swapped with the person next to us, and ate this. We’re sure you’re thinking- but why?! Well, the intention is that we bless + infuse our own fruits with good vibes, healing + positivity through meditation. Then out of no other reason but pure love + desire to radiate good vibes, pass these powers onto another soul in need of a little magical boost. By consuming the other person’s fruit, we then in turn ignite the process of our own healing through their good-will-infused fruit. Mic. Drop.
RA MA have so many classes we are dying to try, from short 15 minute prosperity meditations to help re-focus + reset, through to healing sessions and even power workouts that give greater focus to the physical body. Trust us- the sweat is real. We can’t wait to hit up their studio in New York later this year, and will most certainly return to the gorgeous Venice studio soon. For anyone keen to diversify their practice + be utterly in awe of how simple breath work and movements can invigorate the body + mind, we couldn’t recommend this gem more.
