2018 is over and with it we move on from last years wellness trends of intermittent fasting, ketogenic diets, boutique HIIT work out studios and CBD infused everything. So what will the trends of 2019 be? People will be ditching strict keto diet and start carb cycling while meeting their nutritional goals. Instead of fancy boutique fitness studios, people will be accessing apps and working out from home whilst traveling. Instead of accepting the flu, preventing and maintaining health via IV therapy will be the mainstream conversation everyone is talking about.
NO MORE STRICT KETO
We became more macro nutrient conscious in 2018 mainly due to learning about a ketogenic diet. People are getting more health conscious so opting for a healthier version of keto diet will be the key. Dr Will Cole’s Book “Ketotarian” encourages a more vegan/vegetarian way to do a keto. Instead of unhealthy bacon fat and dairy infused everything opting for a healthier version for some who can’t tolerate dairy or choose not to eat meat will be just as effective to reap the many mitochondrial regenerative benefits of a keto diet.
Carbohydrates may have gotten a bad rep in the past but not all carbohydrates are bad when eating healthy ones like quinoa, brown rice, whole grain to name a few. We will also see more people “carb cycling” allowing people to strictly avoid carbs for a few day but also allows them to indulge and not have to give up their favourite foods. Athletes use this to help with training to either lose weight or gain muscle. A typical approach is do low carb for 5 days and then 2 days higher carb with one “cheat day.” Protein is a big component of carb cycle but fat will vary depending if you’re doing a higher or lower carb diet. So a lower carb day calls for higher fat content and vice versa. A high carb day calls for lower fat foods.
WORKING OUT FROM HOME
People are moving away from expensive overpriced fitness studio to workouts they can do at home through FiitTV and things like Pelaton. It’s convenient and apps can be accessed anywhere at the convenience and time you prefer. Even numerous boutique studios have online and live streaming anytime like Tracey Anderson, Anna Kaiser, Barre 3 and Core Power Yoga. There are numerous apps as well like cody app, aptive, keelo, playbook, sworkit to name a few. We will also see people slowly straying away from intense HIIT workout especially if dealing with adrenal burnout as that negatively affects their cortisol levels.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF CARE
From Miravelle weekend escapes to meditation classes, everyone is looking to improve their overall wellness and stress levels. Adrenal Fatigue and burn out is common and negatively effects other aspects of health. We will see more boutique luxury Ayurvedic spas emerge catering to self care and overall stress reduction with services like reiki, crystal healing, and marma therapy.
NUTRAGENOMICS MARKING INDIVIDUALIZED MEDICINE
Personalised medicine is the mainstay of 2019. From 23andme, Everywell and numerous companies emerging with at home kits, we will start seeing patient reap the benefits of targeted care. I always personally encourage patients to meet with an Integrative & Functional Medicine doctor to help interpret those results and also seek guidance on test before they purchase them.
TELEMEDICINE WITH WORLD WIDE PHYSICIANS
As technology advances, physicians will be stay on top by providing patients individualised care through the world wide web at the convenience of patients. This is wonderful because patients can also see leading world experts in specialised fields without all the stress and added traveling costs.
THE RISE IN IV THERAPY
IV therapy is not just a “Trend” but a way to incorporate wellness and help the body detox. Patients in offices of Functional Medicine clinics and luxury med spas getting IV therapy for everything from preventing a cold, boosting their immune system, helping with cancer treatment to overall wellness and anti ageing regimens will.
Detozing isn’t a new trend but they way we do it is changing, from Infared saunas studios popping up to ozone therapy and even float therapy, everyone is trying new ways to detox and relax. Not only does detoxing help with overall energy, improving mood and metal toxicity as well as maintain a healthier lifestyle.
