How would you feel If I told you to drop the rules when it came to the gym? Totally forget the amount of times a week you were meant to go, throw your programme in the bin and start again. Would it fill you with total anxiety? Why? The fear of gaining weight? Slowing down? Getting it wrong? Wrong by whose standards? Why are we so afraid to break the rules? Who is even making the rules?
The moment I got rid of the rules in training was the moment my relationship with the gym changed. As both an everyday girl and coach, I was filling myself up with what ‘he’ said worked, what ‘her’ method was, how many times a week I ‘should’ be training and guilt if I didn’t go to the gym. I was attaching outcomes to a set of rules that left me feeling so confined and confused.
Most of my clients come to me in a state of confusion and are overwhelmed. Their first question is usually how many times a week should I being doing ‘x’, what should I be doing outside of training with you? So many questions! As a coach, it is my responsibility to ensure that only a few rules are kept. These are correct form, enjoyment and what feels good for YOU!
By now, most of us are educated on what healthy eating and moderate exercise looks like, yet we overcomplicate it with rules. We don’t even know who sets these rules nor know who we are answering to if we get it wrong.
Let go. Let go of the outcomes, let go of the rules. Train 3-4 times a week, eat well, sleep more, rest more. It really is that simple.
