Two sisters, Gracie & Sophie picked up the name the squirrel sisters from childhood ( Squirrel rhymes with their surname Tyrell) ( they also love nuts) – only for it to later become the name of the wellness industry favourite guilt-free treat. The girls, who just how we like it – love to have fun but are also passionate about health and wellbeing.
On mission is to help others believe that in treating yourself you can treat your health! They want consumers to feel proud to be healthy and enjoy the choices that they make. They want people to feel that they are the best version of themselves that they can possibly be, physically and mentally! The bars are their own recipe; Gracie used to make them for Sophie at home because she has a gluten intolerance and couldn’t find anything gluten-free that actually tasted good and was completely natural. Launched in November 2015, the yummy bars went from a home made recipe to now being stocked in over 500 stores across the UK including Boots, Whole Foods, Planet Organic, Revital and Holland & Barrett (online) and lots of independent cafes, delis, farmshops and health stores as well as fitness studios including Lomax, Barrecore, Ride Republic, YogaHaven and many more. They have also gone international and are available in some stores in Belgium, Sweden, Amsterdam, Germany and The Netherlands. Pretty dam inspiring right?
We love nothing more than driven, successful women who are passionate about health and building a business so guess what? We spoke to the girls to find out all the secrets behind building a brand together and what is in store for 2017!
What is it like working with your sister?
It’s amazing! Not only is it fun working together but the other important part is that we trust each other implicitly and have each others back so the support is amazing. Having your own business can be really stressful at times, especially when things go wrong or when you have to make important decisions so having the support of each other at times like that is invaluable. It’s even better when things go well and we have each other to celebrate with, that’s really special!
What does a day in the life look like for SS?
Most days vary but a typical day consists of us being in the office, replying to and sending lotssss of emails, having meetings about SS plans and generally doing all we can to keep developing and growing our brand.
What has been the hardest part of launching the brand?
One of the hardest things for us was finding a factory that could make our bars on a larger scale. We trialed our recipes at a few factories but due to the fact we were making much larger quantities it wasn’t working; the bars were completely different in taste and texture to what we were making at home. Eventually after about 6 months of searching and testing we found the most incredible factory that did a trial using our recipes and they made it work… the bars came out perfectly and still had the homemade taste and feel to them, which is so important to us.
What is in store for 2017 and SS?
We have lots of exciting things brewing …one of the exciting things is that we are going to be launching some new products so keep your eyes peeled 🙂
What advice would you give to anyone trying to start their own business?
Make sure it’s a genuine passion and something you 100% believe in. If you have any doubt or are only doing it because you want to make money or work for yourself then don’t bother because it will just be a waste of time and money. If you truly believe in your business idea then go for it- you’ve got nothing to lose and the passion will keep you going. Starting your own business is extremely hard and there will be lots of times when you think you want to give up so if the passion is there that will keep you going and get you through.
