Meditation is known to be great for promoting relaxation and helping us to better understand our thoughts, feelings and emotions. It is a lesser known fact that regular meditation can also heighten your senses. On a very basic level, this can be attributed to the fact that during meditation your mind becomes more connected to the rest of your conscious body.
When you enter a state of deep meditation, you will notice that in the present moment your perception is heightened, and that you are better able to focus. When you continue with your meditation, with time you will observe that this perception stays with you, even when you are not meditating. This can then lead to a heightening of your senses.
But why is this?
1. BLOCKS OUT THE NOISE
First of all, when your mind is quiet your senses have the chance to be amplified. On the flip side, when your mind is cluttered you have less focus and less energy to use in this way. During meditation, you are actively encouraging your mind to be free of troublesome thoughts and when you do so you will be able to think and listen with greater clarity. This can also then extend to your other senses. As your practice progresses, you will become better equipped to clear your mind beyond meditation.
2. INCREASES INTUITION
Secondly, meditation enhances how intuitive you are, and this is connected to how you sense the world around you. When your tune into your intuition you will be more aware of your thoughts and feelings, and you will gain awareness of your senses too.
The sense of smell is one of the most common senses that is reported to be heightened due to meditation. This can be directly connected to the breathing exercises that are an integral part of meditation. When you breathe deeply in and out, the tiny capillaries inside of your nose open, and this can heighten your sense of smell.
Studies have also shown that deep inhalation through the nose can increase electrical energy in the brain where memories and smells are processed!
To get the most you can out of your meditation sessions in regards to heightening your senses, it is necessary to practice regularly for extended periods of time.
