If 2017 is anything to go by, the meteoric rise of wellness is inevitably set to continue in 2018. Last year saw the evolution of food fads into serious life enhancing contenders- Exhibit A: turmeric, a medicinal staple in Ayurvedic cultures for years. We’ve had purple foods, gut-loving bone broth and rainbow lattes wash over our feeds- but what will this year bring? We’ve taken it upon us at ALT/HQ to suss out the best of the best so you can get a head start on upping your health game
- GUT HEALTH PART 2
Gut health knowledge bombs were dropped left right and centre, with the importance of beneficial bacteria for optimal health being made clear. Prebiotics and probiotics were all the rage, but this year will see care for our gut step up a gear. With each of our bodies being totally unique from one another, is it any wonder more optimised and tailored protocols are set to launch? Just like there is no one size fits all when it comes to overall health, so goes for gut health too.
- TAKE A (TECH) BREAK
Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE the digital world. It allows us to connect to all you wonderful souls and most importantly is unparalleled in its ability to educate. But somewhere along the way things have gotten a little warped. The boundaries between online and reality have blurred and blurred and we no longer find it as easy to switch off and remain rooted in the present. Social media has seen a spike in anxiety levels as we fruitlessly compare our lives to others. It’s even changed the way we interact with one another- face to face communication has dwindled. So this year prepare for more talk of ‘digital detoxes’, ‘switching off’ and ‘disconnecting to reconnect’. Have you seen ALT/ wellness expert Julie Montagu’s 5 tips for daily digital detoxing? It’s easier than you think, trust us!
- SELF-CARE IS ESSENTIAL, NOT SELFISH
Can we get an A-MEN?! Say adios to the days of feeling guilty for putting yourself first. Last year the tide began to turn and more and more of us learned to shut down shop, say no and spend some one on one time with OURSELVES. No ifs, no buts, no apologies. We quickly began to realise the positive ripple effects of taking time out to do what made our souls light up and recharge at the same time. More confidence, more energy, more drive and more love to share with those around us. With self-care meaning something different to each and every one of us, expect to see journals, beauty products, books, fitness concepts and more all revolve around the theme of self-respect, self-love and self-care.
- CLEAN BEAUTY
What consumers want, consumers get, and in this case it’s green beauty. Gone are the days where organic beauty products were inaccessible and out of reach for most due to their high price points. With high street chains like Holland + Barrett launching their own clean beauty tools, consumers are waking up to the fact that what they put on their body is as important as what goes in.
- INTERMITTENT FASTING- BUT FOR HEAPS MORE BEYOND LOSING WEIGHT
Intermittent Fasting has split the crowd over the last year, with many claiming it to be the holy grail of health regimes while others couldn’t be more against it. While the debate rages on as to whether its the solution to long-term weight loss, we’re more interested in its positive effects on deeper aspects of our health. Think balancing blood sugar levels, increased cognitive function + decreased inflammation. It seems scientists are twigging on to the fact that giving our bodies longer periods to rest and digest may be increasingly beneficial. While many jump to thinking that IF means slashing calories, this is far from the truth and is the biggest misconception it faces. It’s rather about giving our bodies longer to rest and digest, allowing longer periods for cellular repair. For this reason, Integrative Medicine Doctor Amy Shah M.D cites it as an ‘anti-inflammatory powerhouse’.
- SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Last year saw a major shift in priorities from healing just our bodies to healing the planet, and the ripple effect is set to continue this year. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the world we live in can no longer withstand the pressures of our lifestyles. From the food we consume to the clothes we buy, right through to how we dispose of waste, all signs point towards the need to adopt more sustainable regimes. More and more brands are evolving their protocols to align with more ethical and sustainable principles, while influential figures from celebrities to online personalities are championing zero waste lifestyles in a bid to encourage the rest of us to do better. We say YES to this being more than a momentary trend- let the sustainable movement march on!
- CRAZY FOR COLLAGEN
You only have to cast an eye over popular US wellness bloggers like Shut the Kale Up, Lee from America and RachL Mansfield to see what the fuss is about collagen. Remember what we said about Gut Health round 2? Collagen is undeniably part of the mix given its incredible gut healing benefits. No longer a popular ingredient in beauty products, collagen powder is set to become a smoothie staple. Say hello to shinier hair, longer nails, baby smooth skin and your strongest gut yet. We adore the brand Vital Proteins for their extensive range of collagen powders from grass fed beef based blends to MARINE collagen! We’ve been going gaga for collagen for a long time now at ALT/HQ and are over the moon to see it FINALLY come to the fore.
- THE LOW FODMAP LIFE
IBS sufferers rejoice! Eating out and munching on the go need no longer be troublesome. Knowledge of the low FODMAP diet is set to become more mainstream, with more brands promising to label options along the lines of ‘GF’ + ‘DF’. This short-term diet temporarily eliminates IBS inducing foods like dairy and high sugar + high carb foods in order to relieve symptoms and help identify triggers. Check out our piece on low FODMAP living here.
- SEE YA SODA
While Coca Cola’s reign may not be quite over, it does seem that consumers are finally waking up to the pitfalls of regular fizzy drink consumption. With sales on the decline and the rise of low sugar, natural + most importantly DELICIOUS alternatives, the wellness revolution is truly here to stay. Some of our favourite swaps for soda include Matcha Now, True Nopal + Dash Drinks- all free from refined sugars and hit the spot when we need a refreshing pick me up.
- SWEETER DREAMS FOR ALL
With last year seeing more and more illnesses, deficiencies and low energy levels being put down to a lack of sleep, get ready for the sleep optimisation technology takeover. It’s no longer cool to breeze into work bragging nonchalantly about having ‘slept two hours last night’- don’t believe us? Nearly every major CEO, celebrity and influencer puts sleep down as their number one priority, and that without the magic eight they really struggle to function optimally. From talks of phone curfews, magnesium spray and meditation improve our sleep hygiene and quality, 2018 will see further emphasis on making our dreams even sweeter.
- JUST BREATHE
2017 saw meditation become an integral part in the lives of millions when it rose to popularity as an accessible way to relieve stress and manage emotions. This year seems no different as it continues to diversify, allowing more and more to practice it in the way that best suits them. For those seeking to step their practice up a gear, breathwork is set to be the next big thing. Already a key part of many yoga styles like Kundalini, expect to see a rise in purely breathwork dedicated classes and workshops across town. The breath is something we already have, but are not using to its maximum potential to calm our nervous system, mind, body and spirit. Unlike meditation, which can be difficult to engage in all the time, you can take breathing exercises ANYWHERE, thus making it a practice available to all.
- MAD FOR MORINGA
For those who went nuts over turmeric last year, meet moringa- the green superfood that supposedly has even MORE anti-inflammatory goodness. With a history of healing power in Chilean, Indian and African cultures, it’s slowly making its way over here as a mega health essential. Boasting double the protein of spinach and triple of iron, it’s also chock full of vitamin A, calcium and potassium. Sounds like we’re on to a winner! Thankfully it’s also got a pretty mild taste, and so can be easily scooped into smoothies, soups, eggs and pretty much anything else you can think of!
- LADIES WHO LUNAR-SYNC
Female empowerment is on the rise, which in our eyes can only be a good thing. According to Well+Good contributing astrologer Jennifer Racioppi, ‘the moon—with its monthly cycles and powerful pull that can make oceans (and your uterus) move to its rhythm—has become something of a #girlpower totem’. Talks of ‘Mercury in Retrograde’ and setting intentions in line with the moon’s phases are no longer being met with blank stares, but rather bigger influencers in the shaping of our actions. Racioppi affirms that ’it’s a way we can connect with the power of these natural forces that we’re aligned with.”
- GIVE CRICKETS A CRACK
With talks of sustainable living on the rise, those who aren’t quite ready to give up animal products for veganism may have a new option- crickets. Hear us out. Myth busting wellness expert and author of The Forensic Nutritionist Fiona Tuck says that ‘eating insects is good for the economy and the environment: crickets require less land, food, water, and energy than many animal protein sources including beef, chicken or pork.’ Not to mention they’ve been eating insects for decades over in Asia. What’s more, they’re actually pretty good for us too, made up of a whopping 69% protein and all 9 essential amino acids. They’re also a great source of both Omega 6 essential fatty acids and Omega 3 in the “perfect” 3:1 ratio, and have double the potassium of spinach, equal calcium levels to milk. And get this- they’re also a source of heme, the more absorbable form of iron commonly found in red meat.
CBD made its way over to the UK in the last quarter of 2017 and is set to topple the opinions of the strongest sceptics. Sourced from he cannabis plant, it’s only composed of 0.3% THC- think less highs and more anti-inflammatory benefits, reduced cramps, lower anxiety and better sleep. Healthy hotspot Rawligion have already created a range of CBD infused chocolates, tonics and smoothies, while the turmeric brand Wunder Workshop’s newest product is special turmeric CBD oil blend that you can use on the daily.
- CLEAR ROOM CLEAR MIND
A clean space now means more than just picking yesterday’s clothes off the floor and hoovering your surfaces. Burning off palo santo and sage enables you to move negative energy, making space for a totally pure environment for positive vibes to flourish.
- A-LIVE AND KICKING
Live workouts in real-time are becoming increasingly popular and in need due to our frantic lifestyles. Working from home or remotely means that many of us just don’t have time to get to and from the gym or studio for our favourite class. Epic brands like Yogi2Me and Fiit have caught onto this, and are now offering brilliant live sessions from our favourite yogis and fitness personalities without compromising on quality. Prepare to box, punch, kick, stretch and sweat it out- all from the comfort of your living room!
- GET PLAYFUL
On the theme of working out, it seems as if many of us are still, well, working on it. Our feeds are filled to the brim every day with quick HIIT workouts, squats on end and fancy yoga poses. It seems as if exercise has become all too serious, and is in dire need of being injected with a little more fun. Fear not, as 2018 will see the rise of more playful, animalistic style classes that will help you engage with exercise in a more childlike manner. Rather than trying to nail a move, this will be more about moving with fluidity and mindfulness. And who doesn’t like working out when it doesn’t actually feel like you are? More of this we say please.
