We compare and analyse, one another we comment, we like/don’t like – we judge. Everyday, we judge others and we judge ourselves. Hailed by the New York Times in 2009 as a ‘guru’ for the next generation, we are honoured to share an exclusive interview with motivational speaker, life coach and Hay House author Gabby Bernstein. 1. Firstly, Gabby huge congratulations on the launch of your new book ‘The Judgement Detox’. Throughout all your previous books, you focus on so many topics and lessons that help us be the best version of ourselves. Tell us what inspired you to write a whole book about judgement?
When I was writing my book The Universe Has Your Back, I dedicated a chapter to the topic of clearing judgment. When I completed that chapter I said out loud to myself, “Oh boy, this is a book!” Then as the Universe would have it, I sold the book and began writing it right around the 2016 election in the U.S. During that divisive time it became clear that this book was a necessary message.
2. The book is based on an interactive six-step detox, can you tell us a little about what we can expect from the detox?
The Judgment Detox helps you become aware of your judgment and provides spiritual and practice tools for healing it. The healing begins when readers understand the ways that they’ve used judgment to avoid their deep-rooted pain. When we address the root cause behind our judgment we begin to truly heal our perceptions of ourselves and the world. Each step builds upon the next and is simple to apply. The other reason this process works is because it gets you into the habit of auditing your judgment daily. This six-step practice offers many promises. Petty resentments will disappear, compassion will replace attack, the energy of resistance will transform into freedom and you’ll feel more peace and happiness than you’ve ever known. I can testify to these results because I’ve lived them. I’ve never felt more freedom and joy than I have when writing and practicing these steps. The Judgment Detox is an interactive process that calls on spiritual principles from the text A Course in Miracles, Kundalini yoga, the Emotional Freedom Technique (aka Tapping), meditation, prayer and metaphysical teachings. I’ve demystified these principles to make them easy to commit to and apply in your daily life. Each lesson builds upon the next to support true healing.
When you commit to following the process and become willing to let go, judgment, pain and suffering will begin to dissolve. And the miracles keep coming.

3. Throughout the book, you admit that most of us judge every day, why is that we are so addicted to judging others?
We repeat a self-judgmental story on loop all day long. I’m not good enough. Why did I make that mistake? I’m ugly. I’m not smart enough. And so on. All these self-inflicted behaviors are just another form of addiction. We unconsciously choose to judge rather than feel the pain beneath our wounds.
4. What feelings can we expect to show up when we are in a state of judgement?
When we feel attacked by someone, our response is to attack back. We feel justified in fighting back and defending ourselves from a perceived attack. Of course, this only creates more separation and compounds the problem. Unfortunately, the internet can exacerbate things. We now see people of all ages cyberbullying others via social media with devastating consequences. There are many serious examples of high school and college students committing suicide over negative posts and harassment, and even more cases of otherwise happy people finding themselves depressed after comparing their lives to the curated galleries on photo-sharing apps.
5. Can we and do we need to completely rid ourselves of judgement?
The goal of the Judgment Detox isn’t to abolish judgment. The goal is to no longer believe in it so that you can return to peace of mind as quickly as possible. By practicing the steps in this book judgments can come and go quickly. That’s the goal. When you no longer rely on judgment as a way of avoiding pain, it will no longer be a habit you turn to. There is also an important distinction between judging and discerning, which I detail in the book.
6. You talk about the practice of EFT throughout the book to help heal, can you give us a little overview of what EFT is?
The practice of EFT asks that you tap on specific energy meridians on your body. When these meridians are stimulated, they tell the amygdala (the part of our brain essential to feeling fear) to calm down. When the amygdala gets the message that it’s safe to relax, a major shift can occur in your emotional state. I have created specific scripts to address many of our most common trigger issues. As you tap on the specific meridians you’ll be guided to address certain emotions that come up around your stress. This practice will help you heal the triggers, wounds and traumas that live underneath your judgments. This process alone can have a huge healing effect on your life. I teach EFT in the second step of the Judgment Detox so you can feel significant relief from the get-go.
8. Can you give us a brief overview of what the judgement cycle looks like?
When you’re stuck in the judgment cycle you can feel physically and mentally drained. Judgment causes inner turmoil, feelings of guilt and stress. Judgment may give you a high at first — but the hangover really sucks. Judgment lowers our energy and weakens us physically and mentally. It makes us feel alone and cut off from inspiration and love.
9. Forgiveness is the lesson you speak of throughout the book as being key to making our healing ever-lasting. Why is forgiveness so essential in the process?
The last step in the Judgment Detox is to bring your shadows to the light. This step is all about forgiveness. I put it at the end of the book because I knew the reader would need to go through the earlier practices to be prepared for forgiveness. Your readiness is all that is required to truly forgive. When you become willing to release the your resentment you can open up to experience forgiveness.
10. One of the many tools you give within the detox is to ‘See someone for the first time’ . What do you mean by this?
This step requires the reader to see through the lense of compassion and love rather than the lens of the past. When you can let go of the stories of the past you can see someone in their innocence. You can see for the first time.
