It’s safe to say that as a collective, team ALT/ are a collective of certified bookworms. It might only be March, but we’ve made our way through some stellar reads this year. We thoroughly believe knowledge is power in every sense, and that’s why you’ll find getting lost in a good book at the top of our favourite ways to unwind. Whether you’re keen to get back into reading, have exhausted your options or simply want to broaden your horizons by dipping into the unknown, we’ve got you covered. From classics to new releases, our in-house experts take you through the best of the best.
- THE POWER OF NOW: A GUIDE TO SPIRITUAL EMPOWERMENT BY ECKHART TOLL
For transformational life coach + macrobiotic chef Nicky Clinch, The Power of Now is a complete bible for living present and free from our stories and belief systems. Eckhart Toll’s simple question + answer format allows us to quieten the end + surrender to the NOW. We are reminded that the present moment is really all we have, and it is here where we find pure joy + are able to embrace our true selves for who we are. This resonates incredibly well with one of our favourite quotes: ‘You are enough’.
- MY NOT SO PERFECT LIFE BY SOPHIE KINSELLA
Everyone needs to read this. Sophie Kinsella highlights the absurd reality we are portrayed through social media, making you reflect on the true importance of life. Every now and then we all get caught up n the online vortex, all to often forgetting that it’s a curated version of reality. One that definitely helps us zoom out + find perspective, and is top of ALT/ wellbeing coach Laura Phelan’s list.
- BRAVING THE WILDERNESS BY BRENE BROWN
Written by social scientist Brené Brown, this is ALT/ yogi + wellness coach Julie Montagu’s favourite book. She redefines what it means to truly belong in a the incredibly polarised climate we live in. Her blend of research, storytelling and honesty has been pivotal in changing cultural conversation while highlighting hoe to achieve a state of true belonging.
- RECHARGE BY JULIE MONTAGU
Speaking of wonderful Julie, founder of Paola’s Body Barre- Paola herself- is loving this self-care bible. As she is constantly on the go teaching, running her business and raising three children, the book has been so great for her- and we’re sure many mummies + boss ladies would agree. Paola praises it for helping teach her how to slow down + take time out for some much needed “self-care.” ALT/ fitness guru Carly Rowena is also a fan. We are so grateful to Julie for helping shift society’s mindset towards the notion that self-care is far from selfish. Infact, it’s very much the opposite. When we are the best version of ourselves, we can in turn show up fully for everyone around us. Selfish? More like selfless.
- FEEL THE FEAR + DO IT ANYWAY BY SUSAN JEFFERS
Motherkind founder Zoe Blaskey admits to this self-help classic as having had the biggest impact on her life. Learning about the nature of fear changed the course of her life, and enabled her to quit her corporate career to follow her dreams of working in wellbeing. Pretty inspiring stuff. For anyone that needs that little bit of motivation to go after what they want, this is the one for you.
- LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA BY GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ
Not a self-help or wellness book, but one that is well-loved by ALT/ recipe developer + healthy baking goddess Emma Hollingsworth. A beautifully written tale of unrequited love that is perfect to get lost in on a chilly winter’s eve by the fireplace. Hot chocolate recommended.
