So it looks like self-love is officially the title for 2018’s movie. After years of hammering our bodies with a complete lack and disregard of our self-worth and value, we are slowly returning to our sole purpose. To love. Starting with none other than yours truly. If you are anything like us here at ALT/HQ and are wanting to give yourself a little more well deserved attention this year, then you are not short on tools to help you on your way. There are heaps of self-love, personal growth and the ‘best you’ resources out there to kick-start your journey into loving yourself a little more. However, as a 28 year old, not to woo-woo (ok slightly woo-woo), on-the-move, ‘millennial’, it can be hard to find something that doesn’t ‘overdo’ it with the self-love stuff.. I have sussed out my top 5 favourite reads that every gal in my world can relate too.
THE UNIVERSE HAS YOUR BACK by GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN
If you are new to the world of ‘you’ then this is where you start. Not so much just about self-love but about personal growth and switching your mindset to one that will only make your dreams come true. This book quite literally changed my way of thinking the moment I picked It up and was the beginning of my journey into loving myself a little more. The language is completely on trend; it is easy to read and flows perfectly. Be warned, you will need to put some work in like any of these books but hey, no work – no results.
TIP: Read the whole book through to get to grips with the idea of it, and then go back to the beginning and it will make a whole lot more sense. It can be a bit overwhelming taking in all the mantra and affirmations, especially when you are new to it and really stuck in a negative mind-set so be patient. I found it helped to write the affirmations on post it notes, pop them around my room and let the ones fall at me when I needed them. Trust me when I say the universe has your back- literally. Once you have read the book use it daily to teach you the lessons. I just open up the book each day and let it teach me whatever it is meant to. I have probably read the book 5 times now and still every time I read the chapter it falls open on, it feels like it’s the first time.

MASTERING YOUR MEAN GIRL by MELISSA AMBROSINI
This is a book I stumbled across recently on my travels to Australia. A good friend pointed out Melissa’s podcast (which you should also check out here) and it lead me to her book ‘Mastering Your Mean Girl’. I love this book because the language is so on point. Melissa nails it page after page with her messages. When referring to your ‘Mean Girl’ Melissa is quite simply referring to your ego. That annoying little bitchy voice telling you ‘you can’t or ‘you’re not worthy of…’ The voice that eggs you on when you’re feeling down and pushes you to judge and compare. Total mean girl right? Throughout the book Melissa offers ‘Soul Shares’- little bitesize words of wisdom you can keep in your pocket as well as ‘inspo-action’ tasks and lessons that really help you to identify the stories you are playing over and over again and where they stem from.

THE SECRET by RHONDA BYRNE
This Is for the less woo woo amongst you. I think every human should read The Secret and you can always, always tell when a person has. They just go about life in a completely different manner to everyone else. Completely different. For those who struggle or simply don’t resonate with the spiritual, this one is for you. It is straight forward, to the point and just radiates good vibes on every single page. I treat The Secret very similarly to ‘The Universe Has Your Back’- I open it and let it land on the page I need to read. I usually read this before bed to get my eyes and mind scanning over and absorbing lots of powerful words. That way my subconscious marinates in and reflects upon all the goodness while I rest.
The book is broken down in to Health, Money, You and Relationships and makes for a super easy read.
While The Secret is now far from a secret, that definitely doesn’t mean the book isn’t FAR from special. So special.
