After two years of media limelight, celebrity promo and endless insta snaps – we think it is safe to say quinoa has topped the gluten-free charts for weeks, no months in a row. But just as we have managed to get our heads around it, not to mention start pronouncing it properly (keen-wah), looks like we may be on to the next superfood celeb – one with not such a teff, sorry tough, name.
Introducing teff – the worlds smallest grain with big big claims. Grown in Ethiopia and used to make injera (the sourdough flatbread), Teff is a gluten-free grain, high in iron that has been linked to weight loss, reduction of PMS and is jam packed with calcium.
6 REASONS YOU SHOULD BE EATING TEFF
High in protein
1 cup of teff contains around 26 grams of protein while one serving provides 12% of your recommended daily intake (RDI), similar to that of quinoa but extremely high for a grain.
Natural source of dietary fibre
Although teff has a slightly higher carb content than quinoa, it is made up mainly of a type of fibre called resistant starch, now recognised as an important prebiotic (nourishes good microbes in the gut) whilst also being understood to help with blood sugar management, weight control and colon health. Quinoa’s carbohydrate make-up however, is predominantly starch and insoluble fibre. One serving of teff provides 15% of your RDI of dietary fibre, which helps to aid the digestive system.
Supercharged with iron
Unlike quinoa, the iron content in teff is easily absorbed making it a great dietary source. It contains more iron than spinach and almost double that of quinoa, with one serving providing 20% of your recommended daily intake.
High in calcium
Teff tops the charts when it comes to its calcium content, which as we widely know is key for maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. Calcium also plays avcrucial role in other functions of the body and is the sole essential nutrient needed for muscle contaction. One serving of teff provides 7% of your RDI, making it a great dairy alternative for vegans.
Contains 8 of the 9 essential amino acids
Teff provides 8 of the 9 essential amino acids that our body needs for growth, repair and healthy body function. Our body is unable to produce these amino acids itself so relies heavily from our diets to ensure we get them.
Being naturally free from gluten, teff is the perfect alternative for those suffering with coeliac disease, gluten intolerance and wheat sensitivities.
So make some space in that cupboard of yours and pop the quinoa to the back – teff is here to stay
